V–19 On Becoming a Devotee and the Comparison of One Who Desires Material Happiness to a Worm of Filth

Asserted Topics:

The recognition of the bliss of Bhagwan.

Key Points:

  1. A soul that realizes the greatness of Bhagwan and His Santo becomes spiritually discerning and attains devotion to Bhagwan.
  2. After encountering Bhagwan and His Santo, a soul desiring material pleasures is akin to a worm in filth.

Explanation:

In this Vachanamrut, Maharaj speaks kindly to devotees, explaining that whenever a soul takes birth in Bharatkhand (India) in human form, it is certain that an incarnation of Bhagwan or a Sadhu will be present on Earth. If that soul becomes aware of this truth, it will become a devotee of Bhagwan. Once a soul gains a true understanding of Bhagwan and Sant, it becomes spiritually discerning, seeing things as they truly are. Ideally, such a devotee perceives things accurately, with clarity.

If this devotee, with awakened spiritual insight, compares the honor, achievements, and bliss received through association with Bhagwan and His Santo to the so-called happiness derived from worldly, sensory pleasures, then material pleasures will seem as wretched as hell, for they lead to hellish outcomes. Yet, just as a worm in filth cannot exist without that filth, considering it the highest happiness, humans recognize such things as the cause of extreme misery. One who truly knows Bhagwan, taking refuge in Him, has effectively become an attendant in His service and is destined to attain Bhagwan’s divine abode. Compared to this attainment, the pleasures of this world appear as insignificant as crow’s excrement. Therefore, a devotee should not unwisely desire such things. Every wish that a true devotee of Bhagwan harbors is ultimately fulfilled. Hence, even by accident, the devotee should avoid, out of a lack of wisdom, any desire for material pleasures. Only then will they be considered a true devotee. If someone harbors any lingering desire for worldly pleasures within their heart, in the eyes of Bhagwan and His most devoted Santo, they are akin to worms fallen into filth and are deemed indiscriminate in their pursuits.
